First of all, Happy New Year from us here at Diamondback Plumbing! This year, we figured we’d help you ring in the new year with a few helpful New Year’s plumbing hints and tips! So, here are the top five New Year’s plumbing hints and tips from us here at Diamondback Plumbing!
1 – Use Your Garbage Disposal As Intended
It may surprise you that several people don’t use their garbage disposal as designed by the many different manufacturers. Now, we’re not saying that garbage disposals aren’t useful tools for reducing kitchen waste. However, we say that many people put things in them that they aren’t designed to handle. Some of the things you should avoid putting down your disposal include:
- Grease, fat, and oil
- Potato peels, eggshells, and tough vegetables
- Coffee grounds
- Bones
- Sticky, sugary foods like pie and cake
2 – Check Your Plumbing System For Signs Of Leaks
Leaks aren’t always obvious. In fact, they can sometimes be quite sneaky little problems. So, our plumbers recommend checking your home for signs of leaks regularly. Some of the signs to look out for include:
- A sudden increase in your water bill
- You notice mold or mildew near pipes in your home
- There are damp spots on your lawn or in your yard
- Your water pressure seems lower than usual
3 – Flush Your Water Heater (Unless You Use A Tankless System)
If you use a tankless water heater, then you can safely ignore this tip. However, if you’re like most people and own a traditional, tanked water heater, then you should flush it out every year. To flush your water heater, connect a hose to the drain spigot, and turn on the hot water throughout your home. Then, set your water heater thermostat to zero and run the other end of the hose you connected to an outside drain. Next, turn off the water supply valve to the heater and open the drainage spigot valve. After the water heater drains, turn off the hot water in your home and turn back on the water supply valve. Keep the drainage spigot open and let the cold water flush through the system until the water coming out of the drainage hose is crystal clear.
If you need help flushing your water heater, then don’t fret. Just give us a call, and our plumbers would be more than happy to help sort you out.
4 – Get Your Drains Professionally Cleaned
One of the best things you can do for your plumbing system is to get your drains professionally cleaned. Even if you don’t have a current clogging or flow restriction issue, your pipes can still benefit from a professional cleaning. So, before the year gets too far underway, contact us to schedule a preventative cleaning. And, if you know you have a clog already, then we’d be more than happy to help you out with that, as well.
